Dear Friends, Patrons, and Supporters, On the morning of Monday, August 9, a fire destroyed a small portion of Marty's (Main) Room, the building in which the bulk of our book sale is hosted. Thanks to a quick 911 call by Andre Belton, a local homeless gentleman, the good people of the Palo Alto Fire Department responded rapidly and prevented any damage to the surrounding area and neighborhood. Though the fire was controlled and extinguished quickly the room suffered much smoke damage. No one was hurt, but our sorting facilities, office and computer equipment were damaged. The cause is under investigation but the building is not fit for having a sale, and the books unfortunately are smoke damaged. The building will have to be repaired and we are already searching for a temporary site for our sorting operations and for our September Sale. Despite the loss, we carry on. It's a setback, but we are a resilient bunch and this will not deter our mission. WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING DONATIONS. Please bring your donations to our temporary drop off in front of the damaged building. SEPTEMBER SALE - although we have not found regular space to hold our monthly book sales, the September Book Sale will be held as scheduled the weekend of September 11-12. The Main Book Sale will be held in the patio area outside of the new temporary Mitchell Park Library on the Cubberley Campus (Building O). The Bargain and Children's Rooms will be open as normal.
